Leben und Wirken
Ennin wurde im Jahr 809 SchΓΌler von SaichΕ am Tempel Enryaku-ji auf dem Hiei-zan. Nachdem er von 838 bis 847 in China den esoterischen Buddhismus studiert hatte, kehrte er auf den Hiei-zan zurΓΌck und propagierte die esoterische Doktrin, die innerhalb weniger Jahre zum Leitbild der Tendai-Schule wurde.
Des Weiteren fΓΌhrte Ennin die Nembutsu-Meditation (εΏ΅δ»δΈζ§cite-ref-1[A 1]) ein, das auf dem musikalischen Nembutsu, das zu seiner Zeit an dem berΓΌhmten chinesischen Klosterzentrum auf dem Berg Wutai in Shanxi gepflegt wurde. Die Γbernahme dieser Verehrung Buddhas machte den Enryaku-ji in der spΓ€ten Heian-Zeit zum Zentrum der JΕdo-Richtung des Buddhismus.
854 wurde Ennin zum dritten Abt des Enryaku-ji gewΓ€hlt.
